Fred Riter, 52, of Le Mars, this morning was chosen by the county board of supervisors to serve as Plymouth County Treasurer to fill out the term of Robert Kelly, who resigned Monday. Mr. Riter will take office next Wednesday, Nov. 1. Mr. Kelly's resignation is effective at the end of October. The new treasurer has been employed as a machinist at the Gus Pech Mfg. Co. in recent months, and was back on the job this afternoon after learning of his appointment from members of the board of supe rvisors who went to his home to announce their decision. Mr. and Mrs. Riter have one daughter, Mary Elizabeth, who is a sophomore at the Le Mars Community High School. They live at 408 Second Ave., SE. Mr. Riter is a graduate of the local high school and attended Westmar College. He is a veteran of World War II and has lived in Le Mars and the Le Mars area most of his life. Prior to moving to Le Mars last April , he had farmed near Seney for six years. He is a Republican. (Photo not reproducible).

Fred Riter obituary, Sioux City Journal Online, Sioux City, Iowa, Jan 1, 2004, LE MARS, Iowa -- Fred Riter, 94, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Mike Janes officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Wasmer Post 241. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Fred Riter, a lifelong Plymouth County resident, was born June 8, 1909, on a farm near Seney, Iowa, to Edwin Henry and Dorthea (Detloff) Riter. He was raised and educated in the Seney area. He continued his education at Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars. Following his education, he assisted his father with farming. He and Marjorie Eder were united in marriage on May 30, 1935. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was inducted on Nov. 3, 1942, at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He served overseas in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1945, having attained the rank of sergeant. He returned to Plymouth County and worked as a welder and metal fabricator. He would later become the Plymouth County treasurer, a position he held for 21 years. He was an active part of his church and community. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Floyd Masonic Lodge 537 and Le Mars Lions Club, where he received the Warren Coleman Honorary Award. He served as a former commander of American Legion Wasmer Post 241. In 1982, he was honored as the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. He also was instrumental in the creation of the Avenue of Flags at the Plymouth County Courthouse in 1964. During his retirement years, he was an avid wood carver. He assisted with the carving of the totem pole located at the Le Mars Public Library and help several others start and learn the craft. He was a member of the Northwest Iowa Woodcarvers Association. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Mary Pickens of Wenatchee, Wash.; and two grandchildren, Stephanie and her husband, Joe Fuller, and Jeff Pickens, all of Wenatchee.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Marjorie; a son-in-law, James Pickens; two brothers, Eldon and Dwight; and two sisters, Pauline Hanson and Marjorie Hazel.Pallbearers will be Gerald Traufler, Daniel Hoffa, Carter Pitts, Rodney Scholten, Richard Albert and Charles Neuroth.Memorials may be directed to Calvary United Methodist Church or American Legion Wasmer Post 241 for the Avenue of Flags and the Veteran's Memorial Park.
