Notes:

Giles was born in Schoharie County, New York, and lived with his father until he married in 1840. He remained in New York after his marriage to Eliza Hudson Cook in 1840. They had at least 2 daughters in New York, Mary Louisa and Ellen. Sometime between 1845, when his daughter, Ellen, was born, and 1860, Giles moved to Big Island, Marion Co., Ohio. It is not known what happened to Eliza or how and when he made the move to Ohio.

Giles married again between 1852 and 1860 to Ruth Ann Cook Phillips. Ruth was the daughter of Arthur and Abigail (Smith) Cook, brother of Giles' father, William. Arthur was a veteran of the War of 1812 and an early settler of Mishawaka, St. Joseph county, Indiana. The 1850 census for St. Joseph county lists Arthur's widow, Abigail. Also enumerated with Abigail is Ruth Ann Cook, age 17.

Ruth Ann Cook married Melvin R. Phillips in 1852. She gave birth to a son, Jay. They were divorced on 04 May 1854 in St. Joseph county, Indiana.

Jay Cook is listed in the household census with Giles and Ruth Ann in the 1860 census in Marion county, Ohio, along with Mary Louisa and Ellen. Jay Cook also appears with Giles and Ruth A. Cook in the 1870 census in Washington Township, Story Co., Iowa. However, there is no mention of a child, Jay Cook in Giles' will recorded in Story Co., Iowa in 1890. The will of Giles' wife, Ruth Ann, lists the main beneficiary as "my beloved son, Jay Phillips". Ruth Ann's will goes on to mention her grandchildren, Belle Phillips Brown, Estella Phillips Smith, Harry Phillips, Ruth M. Goodrich, and Ruth M. Brown. There is a Jay Phillips who appears in the 1880 census record for Hastings, Mills Co., Iowa, with his wife, Mary, and children Belle and Estella.

According to his death certificate, Giles moved to Iowa around 1867. He owned 2 "blocks" of land on Onondaga Street in Ames, Iowa, in 1887, worth $5,000 and $3,000. In his will, probated the 20th of May, 1890, Giles left $1500 to his granddaughter, Dora Brady and his real estate and personal property to be split between his wife, Ruth Ann, and daughter, Louisa Allen. His will goes on to mention his daughter, Louise Allen, wife of Doctor B.F. Allen of Washington Territory.

  3. Ames Intelligencer, Giles Cook Obituary, Thursday, April 10, 1890, Pg. 3, col. 2, Giles Cook was born in Schoharie county, New York, September 7th, 1812, from which place soon after, his parents moved near Worcester, Otsego county, New York, where he resided several years. From thence he moved to Ohio where he resided ten years. When in the spring of 1868 he came to Ames, Iowa, where he resided till his death, which occurred on the 4th day of April, 1890, being 77 years; six months and 27 days of age. Tho he leaves behind but a few near relatives, these were bound to him by the stonrgest ties of affection and love, who mourn his loss, yet they realize that time had taken the elasticity from his step, the vigor from his manhood, and that but little remained of his former self. But that might soul that shone forth with living refulgence in his eye, till death placed his chilling hand upon his brow, and claimed him as his own, and his spirit winged its flight to the regions of eternal rest. He is gone, and Ames by his death has lost one of her most energetic citizens, whose familiar form will be missed, yet remembered by her people with love and respect.
